The Business Development Model

Teknopol employs a systematic business development model for taking innovators from idea to success. The model originates from Randy Goldsmith, Ph.D and Vice President of Research, University of Texas. Since Teknopol imported it in 2004 the model has been adapted and fine tuned too cover the specific needs and obstacles which Swedish innovators and entrepreneurs encounter.

A Teknopol business advisor, Margareta Wallentén, has subsequently on behalf of Innovationsbron trained 500 people from over a hundred different organizations in implementing the model in their daily work. Now Business Advisors nationwide, and their clients, are harvesting the benefit of a common structure and joint terminology framework.

The model called Fokus Affärsutveckling, "Focus Business Development", provides for a systematic approach to the journey from idea to success. Innovationsbron purchased the model from Teknopol in 2008 with the intent to implement it throughout Sweden, and to provide its representatives with a common approach to commercialization and business development.

Focus Business Development has three main components:

• The roadmap that outlines the journey that each entrepreneur will make together with the business developer. It makes it easier to see the point of departure and the goal, and to relate to various stakeholders and actors in course of the journey.
  
  
• The encyclopedia which provides a joint terminology, to the effect that all entrepreneurs and official stakeholders and business developers can speak the same ‘language’.
  
  
• The tool box – practical instruments that the business developer can use to lead and support the entrepreneurs, educational tools that are for instance analytic and that can diagnoze or identify status. Other tools are more inspirational and aim to encourage constructive dialogue and discussions, drive the process forward.

Some of the tools are to be further developed and others remain to be added, so that there will be a full range to chose from.
